A Large Kettle Brass Kettle
probably northern India
18th-19th century
height: 30.5cm, length: 37cm
This large kettle with a flattened, globular body, has an internal well into which hot coals could be kept to keep water hot in the surrounding chamber. A hinged
double lid corresponds to these two functions. The kettle is attached to a flaring open-work base through which ash from the coals could gather and be
removed. The open-work is in the form of a scrolling, vegetal and floral trellis.
The spout ends in a zoomorphic head; the handle is solid cast; and the lid finial solid cast and bud-like. The body, spout, lid and base are all engraved with
bands and cartouches of scrolling arabesques. Both the underneath of the body and the outer section of the flaring base are engraved with lotus-petal like
bands. The interior is tinned.
The kettle presents an interesting syncreatic mix: the form and function show Kashmiri elements, whilst the engraving work has clear Persian influence.
