Repoussed & Chased Silver Box
China or Southeast Asia
early 20th century

diameter: 6.5cm x 7.5cm, thickness: 3cm, weight: 66g

This small box with finely repoussed panels to the hinged lid and to each side is almost hexagonal in shape, although curiously is significantly longer than it is
wider. The sides are repoussed with typically Chinese flowers. The cover is repoussed with a bird, possibly a phoenix, amid copious blossoms and foliage
within a roundel that is surrounded by further blossoms and foliage, all against a finely tooled ground.

The base has what appears to be a maker's mark  or perhaps a retailer's mark - although the Chinese characters simply read 'Dynasty.'

The box is likely the product of silversmiths in southern China or Chinese silversmiths working in Thailand or Vietnam.

Provenance: from a UK private collection.

Inventory no.: 1357 SOLD
