    Chased Silver Beaker

    Java, Indonesia
    circa 1920-30

    height: 8.1cm, weight: 71g

    Sold

    Provenance

    UK art market

This delightful small silver beaker with gently rising sides is beautifully chased with scrolling plant, flower and bud motifs against a finely tooled background. One side is decorated with a shield cartouche that is chased and engraved with the initials ‘F.M.’ with scrolling. The reverse side is chased with an extravagant addorsed peacock motif.

It is an early and finer example of the silverwork made for the colonial Dutch and the local aristocracy in what has become known as Jogja or Yogya silverwork.
