Shiva Mukhalingam Ensemble
Maharashtra, India
early 19th century
height: 17.6 cm
An unusual Shiva mukhalingam ensemble from the western Indian state of Maharashtra.
The ensemble comprises a platform, a detachable mukhalingam with Shiva's face and a detachable protective cobra hood from which hangs a pipal leaf.
Unusually, a small solid cast nandi is attached to the platform before the mukhalngam.
A mukhalingam is a metal sheath meant to cover a lingam, the embodiment of Shiva's power and given the face of Shiva so that the lord is more accessible to
his devotees.
The pipal (ficus religiosa) is the tree under which Buddha experiences Enlightenment and is holy to both Hindus and Buddhists.
The platform and mukhalingam have soft contours from years of devotional wear and a lovely matching patina.
