A Highly Unusual Krishna Enthroned
Nepal/Northern India
18th-19th century
height: 18cm
This highly unusual bronze shows Krishna seated on a throne that is mounted on four roaring lions. Very rarely in bronze images is Krishna shown seated in
this manner or indeed seated in any manner.
Krishna's hands are in a flute playing pose. He wears a dhoti and body ornaments. The throne has openwork addorsed geese and scrollwork.
The casting is very fine. The details of the lions, Krishna's fingers and chest ornaments are exemplary.
Krishna and the throne have been cast separately; Krishna is removable.
The piece has a smooth, rich chocolate patina and some loose encrustation possibly indicating that this piece was a 'ground' piece.
