Yogi Ram
South India
17th century

height: 11.3cm

This exceptional image of Rama in the rare form of Yogi Ram has a lovely dark-honey patina and contours softened by time and devotional puja wear.

His limbs and body are ample and fleshy and he sits on an animal skin spread over a round throne on a square dais, both of which are engraved with lotus
petals. His right hand is in
vitarka-mudra.

Ram's facial expression is one of reassurance.

This bronze relates to the 14 years banishment that Rama endured in the forest during which time he abandoned princely attire and adopted the dress and
habits of a
sanyasin (one who has sacrificed everything for others.)
