Vitthali
Western India
18th or early 19th century
height: 9 cm
Images of Vitthali are relatively rare. Vitthali is a form of Vishnu or Krishna and is typically portrayed with a conical headdress and with hands on hips as in this
image.
He is worshipped particularly at Pandharpur, near Mumbai, and is associated with filial piety. Vishnu is supposed to have appeared before and blessed a
Brahmin at Pandharpur who had been insufficiently filial but who had seen the error of his ways. A cult subsequently grew up at Pandharpur around Vishnu as
Vitthali.
