Highly Unusual Terracotta Krishna Head
India
19th century

height: 19.5cm

This beautifully proportioned clay model of the head of Krishna has large,
pierced ears and an elegant hair disc at the rear.

Such heads were worshipped in their own right as part of household
altars, in temples, and as processional deities.

There are some old chips to the edges of ears and the base but these
have aged with the rest of the piece and do not detract from its
presentation.
