Painted Wooden Dowry Box (Jautuk Pedi)

This box, one four feet and with a domed cover is made of wood that has been covered with textile on the outside and Hindi language newspaper on the inside
and then painted over.
Each side of the box is painted with scenes of the exploits of a blue-skinned Hindu god, probably Krishna. The cover is painted with five scenes of an Indian
female dancer. Such boxes were used to hold dowry gifts in Orissa.
