Brass Seal in Arabic & Oriya Script - Indian Police
Orissa, India
dated AD 1813
diameter: 3.5cm; height: 5.2cm
This brass seal is in both Arabic and Oriya, a language spoken in India’s Orissa state. It is dated 1813 using the Western calendar. The seal is attached to a
native resin handle. The script indicates that the seal is from a police station in Orissa.
Oriya has had significant Buddhist and Jain influence. As with other South Asia scripts, it has a curved appearance, the result of the practice of writing on
palm leaves, which have a tendency to tear if too many straight lines are used.
