Vajrasattva
Nepal
18th-19th century
height: 13.7cm
Seated on a double lotus base, wearing several necklaces, prominent
earrings that hang from elongated earlobes which denote royalty, an
engraved dhoti, and a five-leaf crown and surrounded by flowing
ribbons, this image has a beautiful even patina; the copper base
being a later replacement. In keeping with typical Vajrasattva
iconography, the image has a youthful appearance, the hair is
gathered on the top of the head and long braids curl down over both
shoulders. A vajra is held in the right hand and an up-turned bell
(ghanta) in the left.
The Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhist sect Ka-dam-pa, also known as the
reformed Red Hat Sect worships Vajrasattva as the Adi Buddha, the
embodiment of the five cosmic elements and the spiritual father of the
five transcendental Buddhas.
