Indian Kutch Pierced Silver Dish & Handle

    Kutch, India
    circa 1890

height: 15.5cm, height (with handle extended): 11cm, weight: 177g

    Sold

    Provenance

    UK art market

This pleasing solid-silver dish is unusual for the fact that it has been executed in the Kutch, Islamic-inspired floral and leaf scrolling style, and yet it is completely pieced. It is concave with a broad rim, sits on three silver, ball feet, and has a fine swing handle that is pierced in sympathy with the rest of the dish.

The edge of the dish is scalloped.

Kutch, north of Bombay, became an important centre for the production of quality silverware for the colonial market in the second half of the 19th century. Items produced were sold locally and exported around the world, most particularly to England, but also to its other colonies and to the US.

The dish is in excellent condition.
