Magical, Flaming Wisdom Sword of Brass & Iron
Tibet
19th-20th century

length: 37.8cm

This makara or dragon hilted sword comprises cast brass mounts attached to an iron blade. The tip is encased in wisdom flames which blaze away from the tip.

The hilt has a snarling
makara and a vajra finial.

Various deities are often depicted carrying such swords, Begtse being among them.

Such an object would have been used in association with Tibetan tantric ritual.

The example here has clear age. The brass has been polished by a past owner. There are no losses and the contours have been softened with age and
handling.

Variations are illustrated in Beer (2004, p. 279).
