Mughal Jali-Style Terracotta Glazed Window Tile
Northern India
19th century
height: 33cm (not including stand), width: 21.3cm
This window tile, molded in the shape of a mihrab (prayer niche) and with open-work
decoration is reminiscent of the sandstone jali screens employed in northern India to aid
with air flow in a hot, humid climate.
Probably the tile is from a mosque or some other public building.
It is covered with an opaque, olive green glaze.
The tile includes a custom-made stand.
