Pair of Miniature Glazed Pottery Ducks
China
Ming Dynasty (1368-1644)
heights: 5.3 cm
This miniature pair of green glazed ducks is of molded pottery with incised feather markings and eyes.
It is likely that such miniatures were made for inclusion in children's tombs. The practice of interring copies of everyday items within tombs dates to at least the
late Shang period (c. 16th century-11th century BC). The practice was particularly prevalent in the Han Dynasty (202 BC-AD 220) and th T'ang Dynasty
(618-907 AD). Earlier pieces do not show the fineness in detail as this pair.
