Exceptionally Rare Silver Gilt Krishna Crown with Glass Inlay
India
18th-19th century
height: 15cm
This exceptionally rare silver gilt crown for adorning a Krishna image during temple festivals shows a syncreatic mix of Hindu and Mughal styles. Both the
helmet and the attached fan-like flourish are inlaid with clear glass backed with silver, read or green lac in the manner of Mughal jewels. The fan is embellished
with two peacocks. The cloisonné work between the glass is covered with gold foil.
The rim of the helmet is edged with a string of ‘pearls’ ingeniously simulated with small glass spheres in-filled with wax.
