Malay Brass Spittoon
Malaysia
19th-early 20th century

height: 18cm; diameter of mouth: 15.5cm

This brass spittoon is relatively unadorned with decoration, which is typical of the more restrained style of peninsular Malay brasswork. Spittoons such as this
example were used by Malays and Straits Chinese for betel consumption, and by
sinkeh or newly arrived Chinese as part of their opium paraphernalia.
