Etched Mughal Ewer
Northern India
18th century
height: 27.5cm
This ewer is departs from more usual examples of this type by having an unusually swollen belly and being finely etched all over. The globular base is
decorated with flowers and other designs. Central arabesque cartouches are filled with bunches of three flower heads reminiscent of Ottoman floral schema.
The surface of the base is also embellished with raised borders of pendants, each is etched with a tulip head, again reminiscent of Ottoman motifs.
The etched handle terminates with a flower bud finial. The spout is similarly etched. The lid is plane and terminates with a finial; possibly it is a later
replacement.
The ewer sits on four sturdy feet.
This is a heavy piece for its size. A ewer of similar proportions is illustrated in Zebrowski (1997, p. 165). Zebrowski comments that this ewer is also heavy.
