A Turkmen Silver and Gilt Belt Buckle and Keepers
Central Asia, late 19th century

length of main buckle: 8.5 cm; height: 6 cm

This extremely fine silver buckle and matching pair or keepers from the Islamic Tekke people of
Central Asia, are finely etched with geometric and floral motifs against a mat, gilded
background. The craftsmanship is of unusual quality. The buckle is gilded on the reverse, the
gilding showing some wear and patina commensurate with its age.

The Tekke traditionally were nomadic herdsmen but they derived their wealth in the nineteenth
century principally from trading in slaves. Buckles and other similar ornaments represented a
store of wealth.
