Large Repoussed Silver Platter
Kandy, Ceylon/Sri Lanka
circa 1920

diameter:  36cm

The design for this tray in repoussed and chased silver is an
exact copy of the semi-circular stones, here doubled, that are
found at the threshold of a stone entrance or stairway at many Sri
Lankan temples. The outer rim shows elephants and other
animals. The inner rim shows a repeated
hamsa motif. The central
disc is unembellished but surrounded by a double lotus petal
border. The rim has a small stamp with the letters 'RPD.'
