Finely Carved Coconut Bowl
Burma
19th century

height: 8.5cm, diameter: 12cm

This bowl is of coconut shell, finely carved with demons and other characters from Burmese myths and legends, all amid fine, swirling scrolls of foliage. It has excellent
patina showing obvious age. The carving is unusually fine for this type of work. Both the design and form have their parallels in the repoussed silver bowls of Burma
which in turn are based on the alms bowls carried by the country's Buddhist monks.
