Chased Silver Cane or Parasol Handle
North India
18th-19th century
length: 25.4cm
The scenes of lions, dogs, hares and other animals chasing one another that decorate this handle are identical to the scenes
employed on a surahi or serving jug in Terlinden (1987, p. 117). The surahi is attributed to 'northern India and the Mughal capitals'
and to the 'early 1740s.' If this dating is correct then this handle also could be attributable to the first half of the 18th century.
Terlinden comments that the animal motifs are very similar to those found in hunting miniatures from either Rajasthan or the Pahari
school.
The handle is in thick, high-grade sheet silver and is heavy for its size.
