A Fine Lacquer Silver-mounted Album
late Qajar Iran
circa 1920
length: 39.5 cm, width: 23 cm
An early, unused photograph album of exceptional quality and preservation. Both covers are of wood, their exteriors and interiors lacquered; the front has
seven applied silver plaques with fine Persian-style engraving that depicts birds, foliage and flowers. The back cover is mounted with four floral silver feet and
has a central ogival medallion that shows six figures on horseback before trees and hills. It is also signed 'ali Islaman' in Farsi (Persian), and set amid scrolling
floral arabesque work within a floral border. The central applied plaque to the front shows what appears to be a dam set amid blue and white scroll work,
bordered by applied silver, and the lot set within an outer floral border. The interiors of the both covers show scrolling floral and foliage work set within
borders against a dark green background. The album has 20 pages.
Lacquered surfaces made their appearance in the Islamic world towards the end of the 15th century. Thereafter, they appeared with varnished paintings on
the covers of pen boxes, book-bindings and other papier-mâché objects. This album represents a continuation of the tradition.
