Bas Bend Amulet Box
Iraq or Iran, late 19th century/early 20th century
diameter: 4.5 cm; thickness: 1.15 cm
This box, of silver and comprising two hinged halves, is chased on the top cover with Koranic
inscriptions in Arabic and with a simple flower motif on the reverse. Each of the eight sides is
inscribed with Farsi (Persian) messages within cloud-like cartouches. Such amulet boxes
usually were worn on the upper arm.
