Traditional Fabric & Cane Parasol
Burma, circa 1920

length: 94cm, diameter when open: 70cm

This umbrella, sourced from within the UK, has almost certainly
been in the UK since the colonial era. It is a beautiful example of
the traditional Burmese umbrella used by monks and laity to
shield themselves from the hot tropical sun. It is stamped in
several places with the otherwise indistinct mark of a Rangoon
umbrella maker in both English and Burmese.

It comprises starched dark saffron-coloured fabric stretched over
ribs of bamboo slithers and secured by multiple strands of
multi-coloured silk. The ribs have been coloured black on the
outside and the umbrella similarly has been given a dark border.

The cane handle has been coloured in ink and terminates in a
rattan grip.

The condition is surprisingly good given the age and material.
There are only a few minor holes in the fabric, no tears. The small
black fabric protector at the top of the umbrella shows more age.

An evocative piece from old Burma.
