Silver & Wood Aubergine-Form Kohl Container
India
early 20th century

length: 14.5cm

This very unusual kohl or kajal container is made of wood painted in polychrome, and then decorated with at least fifty
separate die-stamped silver plaques that show a couple in traditional costume, flowers, parrots and doves. The plaques are
secured to the container by tiny hand-cut silver nails.

It is in the shape of a local aubergine. The stem acts as a stopper and pulls out to reveal a hollowed interior.

Aubergines (
brinjal) are native to southern India and Sri Lanka and are used extensively in the local cuisine for chutneys and
curries.
