Silver Gilt Case
probably Central Asia
18th-19th century

length: 8.4cm, height: 6.2cm, thickness: 1.8cm
weight: 92 grams

This very unusual case, most probably for cigarettes or chewing
tobacco, is fashioned from high-grade silver. The typically Islamic  floral
and vegetal motifs on the hinged lid of the case are highlighted in gilt,
as is the central roundel which is engraved in Arabic.

The sides and base of the case are decorated in a repeated square
motif with possible niello highlights.

The box shows significant signs of wear, but the condition is robust and
stable.
