Silver Covered Bowl
Tunisia
circa 1900

height: 18cm, diameter: 12.5cm, weight: 499g

Antique silver form Tunisia is not commonly encountered on the antiques market. This pleasing example of a covered vase chased with Islamic floral and
foliage motifs is very much in the Ottoman-Turkish style. The lower half of the vase is decorated with a broad petal border and it sits on an everted foot that is
engraved with a repeated foliage motif. The walls of the vase and cover are of thick, sturdy silver sheet.

The interior of the base is stamped twice with two lozenge-shaped assay marks of a type that were in use in Tunis between 1856 and 1905 to indicate a purity
of approximately .900.
