Silver-Inlaid Brass Betel Box
Brunei
19th century

length: 23.6cm, width: 11.5cm; height: 7.9cm
weight: 2.098kg

This large betel or tobacco box is made of thick gauge brass. At more than two kilograms, it is heavy for its size. The lid is hinged and tiered, rising to a
rectangular cartouche that is etched and inlaid with typically Malay scrolling vegetal and geometric designs, in keeping with Islamic sensibilities.

The age of the box is readily apparent - the brass has a rich patina and a soft, buttery feel.

The box likely has its origins in Brunei or Sarawak on the island of Borneo.
