Engraved Brass Betel Box Set

This engraved brass box has rounded sides and a tiered, domed lid that is attached by means of a hinge. The box is engraved on all sides and on the lid with
typically Malay scrolling flower and leaf motifs against a tooled background.

Three smaller boxes, each with hinged, enrraved lids, sit inside the main box. These are for holding lime and other additives for the betel quid.

A related box is illustrated in Hardianti & ter Keurs (2005, p. 85). This box was collected in Sumatra by the Central Sumatra Expedition of 1877-79 initiated by
the Dutchman P.J. Veth and led by A.L. van Hasselt.
