Cloissone Tibetan Monk’s Cap Ewer

This handsome, colourful ewer is of southern Chinese manufacture but based on a ewer of traditional Tibetan form. It comprises enamel work overlaid on
copper. The exterior is profusely decorated with eight fu-lions, lotuses and scrolling ribbons in bright yellow, light and dark green, pink, light and dark blue
enamel against a coral red ground. The lid is similarly decorated. The handle is in the form of a dragon and the spout in the form of a mythical long-nosed
makara. The interior and base are finished in pale blue enamel.

A ewer of similar form and also decorated with eight fu-lions was offered by Sotheby's New York at its 'Indian, Himalayan and Southeast Asian Art' sale on
March 21-22 1990 (lot 637.)
