Engraved Scribe’s Copper & Brass Pen Case
Persia or Central Asia
19th century
length: 33cm; height: 10cm
This scribe's pen and ink box set is of brass with copper trim. Both sides of the pen box are engraved with roundels filled with presumably Koranic script. The
attached cylindrical ink pot is engraved with split palmettes and is fitted with a foliate cover that has a bamboo-like handle.
The stylised cloud-like roundels and the bamboo handle point to Chinese influence, most probably via the Silk Road, hence the possibility of a Central Asian
provenance.
