Straits Chinese Ogival Repoussed Silver Belt Buckle
Southeast Asia
circa 1910
length: 11cm, height: 9cm, weight: 30g
This repoussed silver buckle of scalloped ogival form is decorated with two dragons, a central mythical creature and several Daoist symbols, amid flowers and
bands of foliage.
Probably, the buckle was made for the Straits Chinese or baba-nonya (peranakan) market that was centred on Malacca, Pennag and Singapore and also
further afield in other Southeast Asian centres with old, localised Chinese populations such as those on Java, Medan and Makassar.
There is no maker's mark. The reverse has an elongated 'S' shape attachment to allow the belt to be attached to the buckle.
Provenance: The item was acquired in the UK and most probably has been in the UK since the colonial era.
