About 1 New Burlington Street
Building began on the site in 1735, as part of the Burlington Estate. But only nos 1 & 2 (this includes the building in which the Gallery is located) survive from the original development. Each of the buildings in the street were intended as a grand central London residence, including number 1. Residents of New Burlington Street have included botanist Sir Joseph Banks who lived in the street from 1771-77 and who accompanied Captain James Cook on his voyages to Australia and the South Pacific; and the 1st Earl Camden, Lord Chancellor, who lived in the street from 1778 to 84.
