Michael Backman Ltd has London's widest range of Islamic, Asian & Tribal artifacts. The Gallery offers rare &
unusual objects in new and interesting collecting areas such as Malay brassware, Central Asian artifacts, betel
paraphernalia and Islamic art from Southeast Asia, as well as more conventional fare such as Mughal art, Chinese
export silver and Indian bronzes.
The items are selected not on the basis of political borders and geographic areas but by trade and migration routes.
Motifs used in Kashmir can be traced through to the Indonesian archipelago for example.
Institutions to which we have sold include:
The Asian Art Museum, San Francisco
The National Gallery of Australia
The Art Gallery of South Australia
The Fitzwilliam Museum, United Kingdom
Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Reunion
The Islamic Arts Museum of Malaysia
Royal Ontario Museum, Canada

The Gallery was established by Michael Backman, a writer on Asia, and a long-time collector of Asian art objects. His
books, published by Macmillan and John Wiley & Sons, cover all aspects of Asia - from business to culture - and have
been published in English, Chinese, Spanish, Vietnamese and Indonesian. He is based in London but also has lived
in France, Indonesia and Australia.
The Gallery utilises his wide knowledge about Asia - its history, many cultures, politics and trade - permitting a more
complete understanding of the cultural, social and historical context of the assembled objects.
The online catalogue is fully up-to-date - all items shown are available now. Click here to see the catalogue.
