Large Ottoman Silver Filigree Belt Buckle
Balkans, 19th century
length: 34cm; height: 15.2cm
weight: 655 grams (1 pound, 7 ounces)
This spectacular and massive belt comprises intricate silver filigree over silver sheet backing plate and three inlaid turquoise-coloured stones. From the Balkan region of the Ottoman empire, it is an heirloom piece that most likely would have been worn for important occasions such as weddings. It has excellent patina and dates clearly to the nineteenth century. Fashioned in two parts, the left ‘wing’ is held in place by a removable pin to open and close the buckle.
All of the filigree work is present; there are some losses to the small applied bosses.
