Balinese Cremation Scene,

by Liem Tjoe Ing (1922-1999)

Oil on Canvas

Indonesia

width (without frame): 33cm, height: 44cm

This painting by Liem Tjoe Ing shows a Balinese cremation scene. The bier with a facsimile of a bull or Nandi beneath a pavilion is at the painting’s centre. Bright orange flames are about to engulf it. Colourfully dressed mourners stand in the foreground.

The painting is signed ‘L. Tjoe Ing’ in the bottom right corner. It is undated but probably dates to the 1970s.

Liem Tjoe Ing was an Indonesian artist of Hokkien Chinese ancestry. He was born in Surukarta (Solo) in central Java in 1922 and died in 1999 in Jakarta. As well as being an artist he was also the compiler of the published catalogue of the painting collection of Adam Malik, Indonesia’s third vice president and former foreign minister.

Liem’s style is highly impressionist. In this regard, he seems to have been influenced by several European artists who painted in Indonesia, including Gerard Pieter Adolfs, Roland Strasser, and Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur. Like many of his contemporaries, he painted scenes set in Bali, the Hindu island adjacent to largely Muslim island of Java.

The painting remains in its original wooden frame that is essentially contemporary with the painting. It is in fine condition.
