Rare Kris Hilt of a Lion-Maned Figure

East Java, Indonesia

19th century

length: 8.6cm, weight: 38g

This unusual kris hilt has been carved finely from a single piece of wood. A thin face peers from a scrolling mane which emerges our of floral scrollwork.

The stripy, lustrous nature of the wood suggests that it is

kemuning wood.

The styling suggests that it is from 19th century Eastern Java.

It is in excellent condition and comes with a small wooden stand.
