Large Repoussed Silver ‘Moonstone’ Platter

Kandy, Ceylon/Sri Lanka

circa 1920

diameter: 36cm

The design for this tray in repoussed and chased silver is a based on the semi-circular ‘moon stones’, here doubled, that are found at the threshold of a stone entrance or stairway at many Sri Lankan temples and former palaces. The outer rim shows elephants and other animals. The inner rim shows a repeated hamsa motif. The central disc is unembellished but surrounded by a double lotus petal border. The rim has a small stamp with the letters ‘RPD.’
