Akan People, Ghana, Turtle Ring
Cast Brass ‘Turtle’ Ring
Akan, Ghana/Ivory Coast
19th century
length of bezel: 2.5cm, weight: 34g
The precise form and meaning of the motifs on this ring are unclear. The central part of the bezel is cast with a diamond-shaped lozenge that has been incised with an arrow motif. A turtle has been cast to one side, and some other mystery motif has been cast to the other.
The ring has substantial wear with softened contours. It is marked to the inside of the hoop with two old collection inventory numbers. The ring is stable and wearable.
