Burmese Silver Bowl
Large & Fine Repoussed Silver Bowl
Burma
circa 1870
height: 15.3cm, diameter: 25cm, weight: 1140g
This good-sized bowl is finely repoussed with eight panels showing scenes most probably from a Burmese folk tale. The panels are separated by elaborate, interlocking swirling ribbons and vegetal motifs. The lower section is finely chased with a wide acanthus leaf border.
Bowls such as these were based on a monk’s begging bowl but they did not themselves serve any particular function other than being decorative and providing a means for Burmese silversmiths to showcase their considerable skills.
