Small Silver Dish Repoussed with Bherunda Pakshaya Motif

Sri Lanka

circa 1900

diameter: 11cm, weight: 50g

This small silver dish has an outer border of petals and a central double-headed bird motif known as the Bherunda Pakshaya motif. It is a motif common in European heraldry and was adopted in Ceylon via early Dutch or Portuguese contact.

The lower rim is stamped with what appears to be an indistinct maker’s mark and the letters KAA.

The dish is unusual. The work is very fine, and the condition is excellent.
