Cambodian Silver Blank Seal & Original French Jeweller’s Box
Cambodia early 20th century
length: 8.3cm, diameter: 2cm, weight: 50g
Provenance
UK art market
This small silver seal has been produced by a Cambodian craftsmen (probably Sino-Cambodian), and yet was then retailed in France by a retail jeweller in Toulouse. It provides a small example of how, during colonial times, silver was produced in Cambodia, for sale in France, in the same way that silversmiths in India produced items specifically to order for the British market.
The tapering handle has been chased in high relief with two mythical figures perhaps from the Reamker, the Cambodian version of the Indian epic Ramayana, all amid shrubbery and foliage.
The seal retains its original fitted box. The box is lined with white silk and is stamped in gold lettering which says ‘Mon. Averseng, Joaillier Frabricant, 6 Rue de la Poste, Toulouse.’
The seal is blank and has not been carved with an insignia or otherwise. It is in excellent condition.
