Indian Gold Apsara Pendant

This small, octagonal gold pendant is decorated, on a raised face, with a dancing apsara, surrounded by finely worked foliage, and all within an octagonal border of lotus petals. The gold tests to be least 22 carats.

An eyelet at the top is decorated with a flower motif, and allow suspension from a necklace.

The pendant is closed on all sides and the reverse with plain gold sheet.

In Hindu and Buddhist cosmology, apsaras reside in the heavenly realms. In Hinduism, the heaven of the god Indra is one of those realms. They are known for entertaining gods and heroes with their enchanting music and dance. As such, images of apsaras often appear on jewellery for festive occasions such as wedding jewellery.

The pendant is in a fine, wearable condition. It is likely to be filled with lac.
