This leather pouch or purse (baghu) would have been worn by a Tibetan woman on her belt as a sign of wealth and prestige. It is a particularly fine example. It is set with silver plaques, all decorated in relief with Himalayan Tibetan motifs such as snow dragons and leafy scrolls.
The front of the purse has a leather flap secured underneath with a small catch to hold the purse closed.
The middle of the flap has a large, protruding turquoise cabochon within a high, lotus-petal box setting.
The top of the purse has a fine, brass mount with a central kirtimukha mask with a dragon head on each side. A loop on the top of this is fitted with a leather strap that has a single floral silver stud.
The reverse is set with various silver studs, as is the brass strap that runs around the base of the purse.
The purse is in very fine condition with obvious age and a good patina.
