Brass Asante Ashanti Sandal Ring
Cast Brass ‘Sandal’ Ring
Ashanti, Ghana
19th century
length of bezel: 4.2cm, weight: 25g
This fine cast brass ring has a prominent bezel in the form of a typical Ashanti sandal with high straps, a plaited edge and a woven sole to emulate reed matting. The ring itself has an incised decorative band. Similar sandals are illustrated in Falgayrettes-Leveau (2003, p. 251) for example.
van Cutsem (2000, p. 71) illustrates two examples but ascribes them to the Dogon people of Mali.
The ring has substantial wear with softened contours. It is marked to the inside of the ring with two old collection inventory numbers.
