Cast Bronze Amitayus

This figure of Amitayus (also known as Amithaba) is seated in dhyanasana on a double-lotus throne with the hands in dhyana mudra. The image wears a long dhoti that is draped over both knees and with copious jewellery including necklaces, armbands and bangles, all recessed for possible or implied inlay.

The hair has been drawn into a double top knot and also falls in graceful, flowing strands over the shoulders.

The figure retains traces of both gilding and polychrome decoration. The polychrome was reserved for the earrings particularly.

The image has clear age. The base plate no longer is present but the consecration appears intact. It is sealed in with woven cotton cloth. It is likely that the image once held a vase of immortality or longevity in its hands. There are light dents to the knees.
