Four Framed Lithographs of Javanese printed by Lemercier, Paris, after Ernest Hardouin
published by Fuhri, The Hague, 1853-54
19th century
without frames (each): 25.8cm x 16cm; with frames: 34.2cm x 27.3cm
These four, fine coloured lithographs show Javanese women in traditional costumes and settings. They are based on drawings by Ernest Hardouin who was based in Batavia (Jakarta) in the mid-nineteenth century.
They are titled thus:
– Eene Javaansche Vrouw
– Eene Bataviasche Bruid
– Eene Badende Slavin
– De Njei of Inlandsche Huishoudster
Jayapal (1883, plate 16) reproduces the final lithograph above as a full page.
The four here are well framed, in gold frames. All are in fine condition. Only one has two minor ‘foxing’ spots and then only in the margin, but otherwise all are clear of any marks. Overall, the four very pleasing.
