Madras Indian Silver Frame
Repoussed Silver ‘Swami-ware’ Photograph Frame
Madras, India
circa 1920
height: 22cm, width: 16.5cm
This superb silver frame is from colonial Madras, in India’s south. It is repoussed and chased with various ‘Swami’ motifs amid interlocking scrolling foliage and prominent tropical flowers.
The silverwork is in very fine condition without splits, dents or repairs. The wooden back with its red damask silk lining is a later replacement allowing the frame to remain a fully usable item. The frame retains the original glass which is without chips of scratches.
The quality of the silverwork is at the higher end of Madras, ‘Swami’ work. It was acquired in the UK and almost certainly is a relic of the colonial era.
