Turkmen Comb
Silver-Gilt Comb with Coral & Turquoise
Kazak People, Central Asia
19th century
length: 12.5cm, weight: 52g
This excellent Kazak comb from Central Asia comprises dark wood with finely cut teeth, and a grip encased in hammered sheet silver that has been gilded and decorated with silver applique work on both sides, and set with coral and turquoise cabochons in box settings, again on both sides.
Kazak combs are relatively rare. This example has a superb patina and very obvious age. The gilding is worn and the contours of the silver have been softened from age and use. Unusually, the teeth have remained intact. Overall, this is a fine piece.
